Black venom
They call themselves Black Venom Wesseling – the American football section, founded in 2017, of Turn- und Sportverein Wesseling e.V. They now have a men’s team as well as U19, U16 and seniors’ teams, while a women’s team is at least under consideration. The lively goings-on in Wesseling – located between Cologne and Bonn – is no coincidence, because American football is enjoying increasingly popularity in Germany. Not least among the reasons are the different physical requirements for every single part of the team. An American football team consists of very different “types”: in addition to classical skills such as speed and endurance, power, stability and assertiveness are also required. What’s more, tactical understanding and quickness of mind are enormously important in American football.
Just under 6,800 m2 of our LigaGrass Pro with CoolPlus function in the purely sand-filled variant – the professional version of Polytan’s textured turf systems – was used in Wesseling. It was installed on a base layer without binder in combination with an elastic base layer. The advantages for the American football players are the extremely high stability of the fibres, which gives the turf even more volume and structure. Contrary to what the name Black Venom might suggest, however, the turf system in Wesseling comes in a lush green, the BiColour scheme reinforcing the natural appearance of the turf even more. The pitch markings – the typical yardlines – shine in an intensive yellow.
The immediately adjacent PolyPlay S multipurpose pitch seems almost black by comparison, but is actually graphite grey. Our long-lasting, all-round surface is primarily used for pitches and facilities intended for school sports, ball sports and leisure activities. Its smooth surface and the good ball bounce behaviour make it the ideal topping for many types of ball sports and numerous outdoor applications. As PolyPlay S is permeable to water, the playing field dries out quickly, allowing it to be used as an all-weather pitch throughout the year. It is non-slip and offers a persuasive combination of high wear protection alongside low maintenance expense.
The sports facility in Wesseling is completed by a Rekortan M running track that is used as a sprint section and the run-up for the long jump. Rounding off the colour spectrum with a lush brick red, it is also characterised by outstanding acceleration and high tread elasticity. The surface is also fast and highly cushioned and delivers impressive sports medicine values.
