After 15 or so years of intensive use, it wasn’t just the circular running track at the Franken Stadium that needed a complete renovation in 2013: the semi-circular areas for the high jump, shot put, hammer, discus and javelin were also worn out. The retopping process covered a total area of 9,000 square metres and was carried out with the Polytan PUR and Polytan M surfaces. The competition tracks meet the requirements of the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) and their structured surfaces mean that they are particularly well suited to running shoes with spikes. As well as optimal training and competition conditions, they also provide an extremely robust foundation for other events, including major concerts by internationally famous artists. The City of Heilbronn opted to replace the red running track with a vibrant “Hertha Blue”; in contrast, a calm “agate blue” colour was used for the adjacent areas. The colour scheme means that the Franken Stadium now bears a certain resemblance to Berlin’s Olympic Stadium, whilst the high-quality surface has made the arena fit for the future.
