Since the Olympic Gamesin 1968, all major athletics events worldwide have been held exclusively on synthetic running tracks, commonly referred to as “tartan tracks.” However, Tartan is not a generic term for the surface itself, but a brand name that has become widely used in everyday language. Their popularity is due to their outstanding performance characteristics, such as maximum acceleration, optimum force reduction, and long-term resilience.Polytan offers a range of PU-based synthetic surfaces for athletics facilities, available in both water-impermeable full-pour systems and water-permeable textured systems, including sandwich constructions. Each system is engineered to meet the sport-specific functional requirements of different disciplines. Additionally, climatic conditions at the installation site play a key role in selecting the most suitable track system.
All Polytan synthetic surfaces can be certified in accordance with World Athletics standards for use in international competitions. While the classic brick-red surface remains popular, there is growing demand for UV-stable colours in bold, expressive shades—such as the iconic Hertha Blue at Berlin’s Olympic Stadium.

Types of athletics facilities
Athletics facilities are usually combined with large playing fields and multifunctional pitches. Depending on the use and performance level, different types of athletics tracks are used. Athletics facilities Type A, Type B and Type C all generally feature a 400 m oval track and can be combined with large, small and multifunctional playing fields. These areas are typically equipped with artificial turf, synthetic surfacing or natural grass.

Our synthetic running tracks meet the demanding requirements of World Athletics, EN 14877 and DIN 18035-6 as well as the RAL-GZ 943 quality standards. This makes the surfaces suitable for both international competition facilities and school and recreational sports facilities.
In addition to the classic brick red, the tartan tracks are available in numerous UV-resistant colours. When it comes to the colour design of modern athletics tracks on the sports field, the trend is increasingly toward intense, vibrant shades – a well-known example is the Hertha blue of the track at the Olympic Stadium in Berlin. The certified track surfaces guarantee the highest quality, safety and durability and offer optimal sport-functional properties for training and competition.
