Once a mining settlement, Sportpark Rabenberg near Breitenbrunn has evolved since the 1960s into one of Germany’s leading destinations for sports teams and high-performance training camps. Nestled in the stunning natural landscape of the Ore Mountains (Erzgebirge) at an altitude of 900 metres, the complex offers ideal training and competition conditions for amateur athletes, clubs and professionals from across the country. At the same time, the sports park ranks among Germany’s best recreational centres for active holidaymakers and serves as a peaceful conference retreat for companies.
Where ore was once mined, a place full of energy and movement arose in the late 1950s – Sportpark Rabenberg. After the end of mining, the barren terrain was transformed into a visionary training centre for the GDR – right in the heart of the mountains, surrounded by forests and perfectly suited for altitude training, steep climbs and new sporting challenges.
On 4 January 1968, the “Sports School of the DTSB of the GDR” was officially inaugurated. World and Olympic champions, as well as various national teams, have trained here – names such as Jens Weißflog and Roland Matthes have been associated with Rabenberg ever since. Delegations from around the world soon turned the site into an international meeting place for sport.
After reunification, however, the future of the sports park hung in the balance. Fortunately, after extensive consultations, a decision was reached in 1992 to allow Rabenberg to continue its sporting operations. This marked the start of an ambitious new era, with the construction of modern halls, guest houses, a swimming complex and, later, its own artificial turf pitch. Over the years, Rabenberg has been transformed from a mining mountain into a true sporting paradise – continuing to inspire athletes, coaches and guests of all ages to this day.
As part of its latest modernisation, Sportpark Rabenberg has expanded its facilities with a state-of-the-art hockey pitch featuring synthetic turf from Polytan.
The newest feature at Sportpark Rabenberg is the outdoor hockey pitch surfaced with Poligras artificial turf – developed specifically for hockey and designed for top-level performance.
Key advantages:
• All-weather usability – train and play year-round, whatever the conditions
• Outstanding playing characteristics – for precise ball control and fast-paced action
The pitch meets the high demands of both club and elite athletes. From regional sides to national teams, players can enjoy first-class conditions throughout their stay. Another bonus: the new turf is also used by footballers for fitness sessions and training.
More than ten years ago, Sportpark Rabenberg installed a 400-metre running track featuring high-quality Rekortan BS surfacing from Polytan. The athletics area includes:
• A 400-metre track for training and competition
• Long jump and throwing areas
• A natural grass field in the centre
This combination makes the sports park a versatile venue for athletics, football and other outdoor sports.
Sportpark Rabenberg stands as a prime example of integrated sports facility design and construction. Both the athletics complex and the new hockey pitch were designed and realised by Polytan – from concept and material selection through to final implementation.
With this all-in-one solution, operators benefit from long-lasting, low-maintenance sports surfaces that meet the highest standards of quality and performance. Thanks to Polytan, the sports park continues to set benchmarks as a pioneering sports centre in the Ore Mountains. Whether hockey, athletics or other disciplines – every sports enthusiast will find their ideal conditions here.
