With the completion of the new Sportpark Ost, the City of Regensburg is making a bold statement about the future of its sports infrastructure.
One of the region’s largest construction projects has been brought to fruition on the grounds of the former Prinz-Leopold-Kaserne barracks, with a total investment of 55 million euros – financed by the federal government and the Free State of Bavaria.
The new Sportpark Ost offers professional training and competition conditions for schools, sports clubs and recreational athletes alike. It stands as a flagship example of the modern, sustainable and inclusive development of sports facilities.
A key highlight is the state-of-the-art indoor athletics hall, developed in collaboration with Polytan. It features advanced sports surfaces suitable for all athletics disciplines.
At its heart is a 200-metre indoor oval with banked curves, surfaced with high-quality Rekortan PUR indoor synthetic flooring – enabling sprint and endurance training under realistic competition conditions. This is complemented by 100-metre and 60-metre sprint straights, long jump and triple jump facilities, high jump and pole vault areas, and dedicated zones for hammer, javelin, shot put and discus. A tensioning system and a well-equipped weight training room round off the facility.
The colour scheme is both aesthetically pleasing and functional: all track and run-up areas are finished in an elegant beige, while intermediate zones are highlighted in bright yellow for optimal orientation and a dynamic feel.
Special emphasis has been placed on the innovative Rekortan GEL GT synthetic surface. Its cutting-edge gel technology provides maximum shock absorption and high energy return in all approach and sprint zones – ideal for performance-oriented athletes. The surface was recently honoured with the prestigious SAPCA ‘Product of the Year’ Award in the United Kingdom.
In addition, the hall features the Polytan SMART digital performance analysis system, enabling real-time diagnostics – making the facility future-proof for digital training approaches.
Sportpark Ost also sets new benchmarks for environmental responsibility. A 3,000-square-metre solar thermal system above the park supplies energy to a 500-cubic-metre heat storage tank. Together with a modern woodchip boiler, it forms the core of the CO₂-neutral energy centre, which not only powers the entire sports complex but also the adjacent ‘IQ’ building complex owned by Stadtbau GmbH. During colder months, approximately 50% of the heating needs are met via solar energy – a significant contribution to sustainable urban development.
Resource efficiency was also prioritised during construction: over 6,000 cubic metres of recycled concrete from the former barracks were reused. The supporting structure, façades and ceiling constructions are made of timber – a renewable, climate-friendly material. The energy concept is further strengthened by a high-capacity 315 kWp photovoltaic system for the facility’s own electricity supply.
This project is widely regarded as a model for climate-conscious public construction – and was delivered entirely within budget.
Sportpark Ost sees itself as a venue for movement and community. It is open to Regensburg’s schools, clubs, elite athletes and amateur sports enthusiasts, offering excellent conditions for a wide variety of sporting activities.
Alongside the modern athletics hall, the first floor houses a secluded indoor swimming pool with three basins: one for swimmers, one for non-swimmers and one dedicated to swimming instruction – perfect for school and club use as well as general recreation.
A grandstand with nearly 200 seats provides space for spectators during competitions, events and sports highlights.
The Sportpark Ost is a sports facility of outstanding value for Regensburg – a place where sporting excellence, environmental responsibility and social inclusion come together under one roof.
