American football is the most-watched sport in NorthAmerica, with an average of 111 million US viewers tuning in to the Super Bowleach year and another 800 million viewers watching around the world. Originallydeveloped as a mix of rugby and soccer, American football began in 1869, evolvingat universities along the East Coast into a standalone team sport. An Americanfootball field measures 120 yards long and 53 1/3 yards wide, according to NFLand college regulations. The field is made of either natural grass orartificial turf. Since American football is an intensely played full-contactsport, all 22 players wear helmets and padded equipment. Our American footballfields provide additional player protection: As an experienced artificial turfmanufacturer, we have designed the surfaces to be impact absorbent, gentle onthe skin, high-traction, with a pile height of 60mm, making them ideally suitedfor this high-contact sport. A filling of sand and rubber granules ensuresoptimal force reduction and provides ideal conditions for a dynamic game withquick turns and tough tackles.

Technical Construction
The technical construction of Polytan’s artificial turf systems for American football ensures a playing surface that is both functionally suitable for the sport and durable. From the elastic layer through the turf fibres to the infill, every component is precisely matched to the others. The elasticising base layer (25–35 mm of recycled granules + PU binders) provides consistent cushioning and load-bearing capacity for decades. Different fibre types (smooth, textured or a combination) ensure stability, ball control and durability. Artificial turf systems for American football are filled with a mixture of sand and performance infill, thereby offering additional protection for players and enhancing the enjoyment of the game. The layers from bottom to top:
- Water-draining sub-base
- Elastic layer or base layer 25, 30 or 35 mm
- Artificial turf system with high-quality PE fibres (smooth/textured or a combination)
- Sand and performance infill

Depending on the sport and desired playing characteristics, artificial turf systems can be equipped with different typesof infill. We offer systems filled with quartz sand; sand and elastic infill granules; or sand and cork/ other natural materials. The infill ensures an authentic playing experience, grip and traction for quick tempo and directional changes, clean ball-rolling behaviour, and high player protection.
