Originallydeveloped as a mix of rugby and soccer, American football began in 1869, evolvingat universities along the East Coast into a standalone team sport. An Americanfootball field measures 120 yards long and 53 1/3 yards wide, according to NFLand college regulations. The field is made of either natural grass orartificial turf. Since American football is an intensely played full-contactsport, all 22 players wear helmets and padded equipment.
