An important location for Spanish athletics

Hornachuelos is a small town about an hour’s drive from the city of Córdoba in Andalusia. Tourists are drawn to the area by the Sierra de Hornachuelos, a mountain range with holm oak and cork oak forests and a sanctuary for rare birds of prey, such as the Spanish imperial eagle or the cinereous vulture.

But as small as the place may be, with just over 4,000 inhabitants, it occupies a significant role in Andalusian athletics. In the town centre is the Club de Atletismo Trotasierra, an expansive sport and leisure facility, which includes numerous squash courts and other hardcourts. At its centre is the “Pista de Atletismo Hornachuelos” athletics stadium. The running track is primarily used for athletics events, but is also the end point of the Ruta de la Miel, a cross-country race through the surrounding picturesque landscape. The annual event, which attracts both professional and amateur athletes, is one of the most important dates in the regional sports calendar and brings together participants from all over Andalusia.

Hornachuelos is also known as the host of important national athletics events, such as the Spanish Cross Country Championships, further underlining its growing reputation as a major platform for athletics in Andalusia and across Spain.

The Pista de Atletismo Hornachuelos has four running tracks with an integrated sprinting track and variants for hurdling and the common jumping disciplines. In 2023, we renewed the surfaces in the stadium and installed Polytan Rekortan BS, our tried-and-tested, economical all-rounder for athletics competitions and training. As in Hornachuelos, the structural spray-coated surface is primarily used for running tracks and run-up tracks. Thanks to its combination of an elastic base layer and a solid construction, Rekortan provides optimal conditions for professional athletes and discerning amateurs alike. It has a structured surface that is water-permeable and optimised for running shoes with spikes, while enabling quick and easy installation.

We are entirely confident that the renovated Pista de Atletismo will further increase Hornachuelos’ significance as a central athletic location. Rekortan BS was installed in brick red by our Portuguese partner, SportSer.
