Depending on their level of use, many athletics tracks reach the end of their service life each year. Elastic base layers may also need to be partially or completely replaced after 35 or 40 years. Instead of being sent for thermal recovery or disposed of, these materials can be returned to sports facility construction and given a new purpose.
Our recycling process enables end-of-life synthetic surfaces to be professionally recovered and processed into new granulate. This can then be used in base layers for athletics tracks and multi-use sports areas, as well as in shockpad layers beneath artificial turf systems.

First, end-of-life athletics track surfaces are removed and cut into sections on site. At the ISO 9001-certified FormaTurf facility, these sections are processed using a unique high-tech recycling process that combines conventional and mechanical processing and separation methods. The material is then granulated and dried.
Up to approximately 10,000 tonnes of material can be processed each year at the specialist facility in Essen. The resulting granulate is packaged in Big Bags or 25 kg bags and can be used to create base layers for new athletics tracks and multi-sport facilities. It can also be used for shockpad layers beneath artificial turf systems.

Recycling in sports facility construction goes far beyond conventional synthetic surfaces such as athletics tracks and impact protection areas. Today, even complex artificial turf systems can be mechanically recycled and returned to a closed material loop.
In a multi-stage high-tech process, the turf and infill are fully separated and processed, then transformed into secondary raw materials for new products used in sports facilities, construction and landscaping. The entire process is transparent and traceable, from dismantling through to recycling and reuse.
At FormaTurf, every component of an artificial turf system is recovered and recycled. The materials are separated and then processed in a unique high-tech recycling process. This gives recycled materials a “second life” as new plastic products and bespoke solutions for sports facility construction, as well as a wide range of applications in the landscaping, construction and industrial sectors.
