Depending on how heavily a track is used, numerous plastic running tracks reach the end of their service life every year. Elastic base layers, too, must be partially or fully renewed after 35 or 40 years. Rather than incinerating and disposing of these materials, they can be returned to sports facility construction.
Our recycling process allows old plastic surfaces to be properly reprocessed, so they can be reused as new granulate in the base layers of running tracks or multi-purpose pitches, and in elastic layers beneath artificial turf systems.

First, decommissioned tracks are removed and shredded into sections on site. At the ISO 9001-certified FormaTurf plant, these sections are further processed using a unique high-tech recycling method that combines both conventional and mechanical processing and separation steps. They are then shredded again into granulate and dried.
Around 10,000 tonnes per year go through this process at our certified specialist facility. The granulate is packaged (big bags and 25 kg sacks), and the material can be used for the base layers of new running tracks and multi-sport facilities. It can also be used for elastic layers beneath artificial turf systems.

Through the material recycling of worn-out plastic sports surfaces
Recycling in sports facility construction involves far more than classic plastic surfaces such as running tracks or fall-protection areas. Today, complex artificial turf systems can also be recycled materially in a closed loop. In a multi-stage high-tech process, turf and infill are fully separated, processed, and returned as a secondary raw material into new products for the sports facility, construction, and garden sectors – transparent and traceable from removal through to reuse.
At FormaTurf, every component of an artificial turf system is recycled: we separate the materials and then process them using a uniquely advanced high-tech recycling method. This gives recycled materials a "second life" in the form of new plastic products and customer-specific solutions for sports pitch construction, as well as for a wide range of applications in the garden, construction, and industrial sectors.
