Preparation Center for the 2024 Olympics

With approximately 45,000 residents, Talence is now one of the suburbs of Bordeaux. The city is shaped by the campus of the Université de Bordeaux, home to over 50,000 students. Situated in the Bois de Thouars, a large protected forest area, lies a nearly 40,000 m² sports complex with Stade Pierre Paul Bernard at its center. Opened in 1976, the stadium has primarily served as a venue for developing talent in football and athletics. Many renowned football players, who now play in the French Ligue 1, honed their skills in Talence. The Stade Pierre Paul Bernard is also home to the annual international athletics competition Décastar, part of the World Athletics Challenge Combined Events, where men compete in the decathlon and women in the heptathlon. In 2023, 36 top athletes from 17 nations participated in Décastar. Additionally, the stadium hosts international U18 football tournaments and athletics events for para sports, which contribute to the World Championships. Since 2021, the entire sports complex, including the stadium, has been extensively renovated and expanded. A key objective is to integrate the renovations seamlessly into the ecological environment. All new buildings, including an administrative and sports center, feature cladding made of fired wood. The stadium roof, made of gracefully undulating wooden beams, resembles waves. The outdoor athletics track, completed in the summer of 2022, was expanded from six to eight lanes and equipped with our terracotta-colored Rekortan PUR surface. The indoor track was completed in early 2023. As a full PU surface, Rekortan is the ideal foundation for top international sport performance. Its multi-layered structure ensures perfect conditions for professional athletes and demanding amateurs alike. In addition to the athletics track, we have equipped six 80-meter warm-up lanes, a throwing area, and three jumping areas for long jump, triple jump, high jump, and pole vault with Rekortan PUR. At Stade Pierre Paul Bernard, our high-speed synthetic surface ensures maximum acceleration and exceptional force reduction values. For these reasons, this stadium has been designated a preparation center for athletics and para athletics in anticipation of the 2024 Olympics.
