Over 20,000 square metres of unfilled artificial turf for sport in Munich

With the comprehensive modernisation of the sports facility on Siegenburger Strasse, the City of Munich has transformed the site into a versatile venue for club, school and recreational sport. A key element of the new outdoor facilities are four synthetic turf pitches, covering a total area of more than 20,000 square metres and equipped by Polytan with the unfilled LigaTurf Trion synthetic turf system.

Located in Munich’s Sendling-Westpark district, the facility now offers a wide range of sporting opportunities. Alongside a main natural grass pitch with a running track and various athletics facilities, the site features two full-size synthetic turf pitches, a small-sided pitch and an additional multifunctional full-size pitch. The latter is designed to accommodate not only football, but also hockey and lacrosse.

This means that a wide variety of sports and requirements come together at the Siegenburger Strasse facility. Its main users include SV München West and BSC Sendling, while the neighbouring Hockey- und Lacrosse-Club Rot-Weiß München uses the multifunctional Poligras TeamPlay pitch. In total, more than 50 teams with over 1,000 club members train and compete at the facility. Several local schools also make regular use of the site.

Unfilled across more than 20,000 square metres

All four synthetic turf areas feature LigaTurf Trion by Polytan. The unfilled synthetic turf system requires neither sand nor performance infill, combining modern playing characteristics with reduced material use within the system. Its dense and uniform surface is designed for intensive use, making LigaTurf Trion a future-oriented solution particularly well suited to high-use municipal sports facilities.

The synthetic turf pitches form part of a comprehensive redevelopment of the entire sports facility. Other additions include a new operations building, a main natural grass pitch, athletics facilities and a beach volleyball court. Sustainability aspects were also incorporated into the overall planning, including photovoltaic systems, district heating, green roofs and façades, as well as the preservation of much of the existing tree stock.

Following several years of construction, the modernised sports facility officially opened in June 2026. With its diverse range of sports areas, it now provides modern conditions for training, competition and physical activity in the heart of Munich.
