In a landmark move for sustainable sport in the UK, Basingstoke Hockey Club has become the first hockey club in the country to install Poligras Paris GT zero, the world’s first climate-neutral artificial hockey turf. This state-of-the-art surface, developed by Polytan for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, was installed in 2024 at the club’s long-standing home ground—the Down Grange Sports Complex in Hampshire.
Founded in the early 1950s, Basingstoke Hockey Club has grown into one of the largest and most inclusive hockey clubs in the UK. With more than 500 active members across 13 adult teams and 11 junior teams, the club provides opportunities for players of all ages and abilities. The new pitch marks a significant upgrade for both performance and environmental sustainability.
Poligras Paris GT zero represents a breakthrough in sports surface technology. It is the only FIH-approved artificial turf for hockey that is climate-neutral—delivering top-tier performance while reducing environmental impact. The surface is made using I’m Green™ polyethylene, a renewable bio-based plastic derived from sugarcane by-products that would otherwise go to waste.
This turf significantly reduces CO₂ emissions compared to conventional synthetic hockey pitches. The patented Turf Glide technology enhances ball roll, reduces friction and considerably lowers water consumption.
The dry hockey system installed in Basingstoke is designed to perform exceptionally without the need for constant irrigation yet still delivers a first-class playing experience. The pitch appears in a fresh green finish, framed by a striking blue border that provides a clear visual contrast for both players and spectators.
The decision to install Poligras Paris GT zero reflects the club’s ongoing investment in both player development and environmental responsibility. Whether training future talent or supporting elite-level competition, Basingstoke’s new surface provides consistent playability, reduced injury risk, and minimal environmental footprint.
This project makes Basingstoke Hockey Club the first in the UK to adopt this next-generation turf and places the Down Grange Sports Complex on the map as a model venue for sustainable hockey facilities. The new pitch supports the club’s thriving community while aligning with global efforts to reduce the carbon impact of sport.
