A school track on the international stage

At Stellenbosch High School  in South Africa’s Western Cape, a striking Hertha Blue running track brings international competition standards into a school setting. The Hoërskool Stadium combines a place for young athletes to develop with a stage for established competitors — giving the venue a significance that extends well beyond its eight lanes.

The facility’s connection to athlete development is central to its story. A coaching academy associated with South African running legends Elana Meyer and Zola Budd aims to inspire and support emerging talent, including athletes from disadvantaged backgrounds. Access to a high-quality athletics facility helps turn those ambitions into practical opportunities to train and compete.

Eight lanes of opportunity on Rekortan M

Designed and built by Polytan’s South African partner Trompie Sport, the facility features a 400-metre, eight-lane track alongside pole vault run-ups, long jump facilities and a high jump area. Rekortan M in Hertha Blue provides a consistent visual identity across the athletics surfaces, while the completed track holds World Athletics Class 2 certification.

Polytan’s Rekortan M sandwich system combines a durable wear layer with a sealed elastic base layer. Designed for both training and competition, it offers force reduction and a spike-resistant surface suited to the demands of an active athletics venue.

Where the next generation makes its mark

The stadium’s competitive credentials were demonstrated in April 2026, when it hosted the Cape Milers Club  meeting as part of the World Athletics Continental Tour Challenger series. Among the standout performances, 16-year-old Tiisetso Malungane broke a South African under-18 1500-metre record that had stood for more than 43 years.

That achievement captures what makes this project special: a school-based venue where developing athletes can step onto the same track as international competitors. With Rekortan M underfoot, the Hoërskool Stadium provides a foundation for everyday progress and memorable competition alike.
