Now she is the manager’s assistant at Polytan France and takes care of everything including other people. Valérie Navette has been part of the Polytan family for seven years. She started in logistics. But how does someone with her career aspirations come to work for a sports floor manufacturer? Af- ter school, Valérie Navette initially pursued her goal of becoming a teacher. The subject area was clear: She wanted to study German, which is why she went to Oldenburg for one year as an au pair. At some point her professional aspirations changed. SUSTAINABILITY The world’s first 100 % CO2-neutral football turf With the LigaTurf Cross GT, Polytan is of- fering the first CO2-neutral football pitch for professional and amateur sports. Without sacrificing durability and performance char- acteristics, Polytan has created a product that combines the challenges of environ- mental sustainability, climate compatibility and player demands ers and users. RAW MATERIAL For the LigaTurf Cross GT, Polytan uses the sustain- able and bio-based I’m green™ PE material from our partner Braskem. This raw material has been used in the Poligras Tokyo GT turf since 2018 and has become very popular, especially abroad. The LigaTurf Cross GT consists of at least 60 percent bio-based I’m green™ polyethylene derived from sugar cane. This is certified by an independent laboratory for each turf system. This System structure is the basis for its CO2 neutrality. 14
I’m green™ biobased polyethylene Production optimization 100 % CO2-NEUTRAL The 100 % climate neutrality of our turf is achieved through an integrated optimisation of prod- uct features and technologies. Green Energy ENERGY MIX Polytan’s energy management is certified in accordance with DIN EN ISO 50001. Production was converted to green electricity in the summer of 2019. This is a measure that benefits all the products in our portfolio, including the LigaTurf Cross GT. Of course, this positive climate contribution will also be certified and verified. COATING The new PolyCoat polyurethane wear coat with TuftGuard (see page 34) adds another element to the positive energy balance of the LigaTurf Cross GT. With a lower wear coat weight, lower residual moisture and better heat absorption, the energy consumption in the coating system, the final step in the process to the finished football turf, also decreases. But the LigaTurf Cross GT offers even more benefits. The new LigaTurf Cross GT system have a higher stitch density than their predecessors and offers even better coverage for protection against falls and tackles. Furthermore, the infill granules are better fixed in the turf, preventing the so-called splash effect. The benefit: less rubber granulate is needed and discharge is significantly reduced. Even for the natural infill granulates such as cork and sand, the additional number of fibres means better stabilisation of the materials. Double German champion Tatjana Pinto is in best form: At the German champion- ships at the beginning of August, the German top sprinter won two titles in her special disciplines over 100 and 200 metres and even achieved a new personal record of 22.65 seconds over the longer sprint distance The 27-year-old athlete from Münster has changed several things in her train- ing environment in recent months in order to give herself fresh momentum. Her success at the German champion- ships can be attributed in part to her new trainer Rana Reider, with whom she has worked since March, as well as her high-performing training group, which pushes her to achieve new per- sonal records. Her training group in- cludes two sprinters who have already run the 100 metres under eleven sec- onds – an achievement that Tatjana is also striving to attain. “I want to see the ten before the decimal point,” she says. Her current personal best is elev- en seconds exactly, and she hopes to shave off the missing hundredth of a second and a little more during the Olympic season. PEOPLE & POLYTAN Elisa Gräve The Olympic dream Elisa Gräve has become a fixture on the German national women’s team. In August 2019, the German team won the silver medal at the European Hockey Championship in Antwerp, as they were beaten only by the Dutch. Now the team has to compete in qualification games in order to punch its ticket to the Olympic Games in Tokyo By the way, the midfield player from the Düsseldorf Hockey Club was introduced to hockey by her babysitter who often played hockey with her and her older brother in the yard. Since then, it has been Elisa’s dream to participate in the Olympics. Next year she may be able to fulfil her dream once again. On a Polytan hockey turf! The fitness course with a tartan surface runs through the park like a ribbon laid in a zigzag pattern. The planners chose the water-perme- able and well-cushioned synthetic surfaces PolyPlay S and PolyPlay FS for the sports sur- faces. As at the water playground, the con- tractors relied on PolyPlay S, which stands out on its own and through its smooth yet anti-slip surface. PolyPlay FS was used everywhere where fall protection was required because of the sports and play equipment.

On the peninsula off the coast of Spain, surfaces on three large-scale construction sites had to be renewed and installed within a very short period of time 1 main football stadium of the former British colony was severely dam- The turf in the Victoria Stadium, the aged. The field had been covered during a large-scale event that lasted several weeks, which caused massive damage and was therefore no longer in compliance with FIFA requirements. The problem: All official international matches of Gibraltar are to be played in the Victoria Stadium, which includes qualification matches for the European Championship next year. Without a new turf, Gibraltar would have to play their matches in Faro, Portugal. The Victoria Stadium was therefore equipped with LigaTurf RS+ with FIFA Quality Pro certification. Gibraltar’s repre- sentatives did surprisingly well and advanced in the qual- ification matches of the UEFA Europa League, which only gave us a limited time window of 10 days between official matches to replace the turf. 2 The next construction site was equally specific. In 2019, Gibraltar hosted the Island Games, a sports event that is carried out every two years among autonomous islands and island groups. Although Gibraltar is technically a peninsula, the country was still permitted to participate due to its isolated location. The athletics competi- tions were held in a facility constructed on top of a carpark that is built into the mountain. A complete running track had to be in- stalled in 13 days. The peninsula received a new eye-catching blue Rekortan M 13 tartan surface. At the moment, the old turf from the Victoria Stadium is being installed on the playing field between the running track so that football games can also be played there. 22

Polytan built a combined cricket and ruby field. This facility also had to be completed be- fore the beginning of the Island Games, since the festivities of the games were to be held there. LigaTurf RS+ was installed as a floor surface and certified for World Rugby. 3 Three large-scale projects that had to be completed within only a few weeks: Gibraltar posed a special kind of sports challenge for Polytan this summer Facts & figures Gibraltar is a British Overseas Territory on the southern tip of the Iberian peninsula. The Gibraltar peninsula covers a land area of 6.5 km², while the border between Gibraltar and Spain is only 1.2 kilometres long. Gibraltar has been under the administration of the United Kingdom since 1704, which was established in the Treaty of Utrecht in 1704. Since 2013, Gibraltar has been a full-fledged member of UEFA and also became a member of FIFA in 2016. Since then, the national team is allowed to participate in official competitions. Gibraltar’s most well-known sight is the Monkey Rock, whose name stems from the cheeky Barbary monkeys that live on the Rock of Gibraltar. 23
REFERENCES Sports grounds of the future We want to prove that it is possible today to construct and operate a sports facility in an environmentally conscious, resource-conserving and energy-efficient manner Sports grounds of the future are being constructed on the out- skirts of Berlin. SV 1908 Grün-Weiß Ahrensfelde has begun building a pilot project that is unique in Europe. The goal of the builders is to create a sports facility that reconciles ecological, social and economic factors with the requirements of sports functionality and usage intensity. SV Ahrensfelde is in the same boat as many other clubs: Their two existing pitches, of which one is a synthetic turf pitch, do not provide sufficient playing and training capacities for the teams. The natural grass pitch in particular is often unusa- ble due to weather conditions. The sports enthusiasts from Ahrensfelde want more than just a new pitch. The entire fa- cility has been planned with functionality and sustainability in mind. “We want to prove that it is possible today to construct and operate a sports facility in an environmentally conscious, resource-conserving and energy-efficient manner,” says the statement of the North-East German Football Association, one of the partners of the project. For this project, Polytan is providing the synthetic turf, the running track and the digital SmarTracks system with which training can be monitored and controlled via timing gates installed in the floor CO² The components are mainly sourced from the reusable ma- terial cycle, of which 50 percent is recycled material. The synthetic turf consists of renewable raw materials and therefore contributes to a significant improvement of the CO2 balance. It is exclusively filled with organic substances. Watering is not required, which saves 390,000 litres per year. The surface is not sealed on account of its water-permeable construction. The drainage water is filtered through the constructed layers, and the surface water is purified with modern mineral filter sys- tems and subsequently flows into the groundwater. Fertilisers and weed killers are a thing of the past. 80 percent of the new running track consists of recycled material. There are many open areas at the facility, which has three playing fields (two synthetic turfs and one natural turf) and a running track. The turf of the champion REFERENCES Bern celebrates winning the title on Polytan turf For two years, the Young Boys Bern have dominated Swiss football. After a long drought, they overtook the series champion Basel in 2018 and commandingly de- fended their title in 2019. The Stade de Suisse is the sports venue for the Young Boys. Since 2014, the Young Boys play their home games on Polytan football turf. The turf was exchanged for the first time in the summer of 2019 after five years and more than 100 official matches in various national and international competitions. The LigaTurf RS Pro II CoolPlus system with EPDM granulate was laid down. For the client, it was important that the playing quali- ties of the new surface were equivalent to a maintained natural grass field. Accordingly, the requirements for form stability, fibre elasticity, fibre density, damping, heat dissipation and not least colouration were high. The Bern sports enthusiasts chose Lime / Field Green as their colour, which is very similar in appearance to natural grass. The surface heats up less on account of the new CoolPlus granulate. The increased fibre count prevents the discharge of infill even better than the previ- ous turf. The form stability was also increased due to the reinforced backside of the turf carpet. Naturally the new field fulfils all FIFA requirements and is approved for inter- national competitions. Even international matches of the Swiss national team can be held in the Stade de Suisse. And the old Polytan turf on which the Bern team celebrated two championships? The turf has been given new life in Wäden- swil in the Canton of Zurich. The local foot- ball club will prospectively play its matches on the turf of champions. Locals often still refer to the Stade de Suisse as Wank- dorf although the modern arena has nothing to do with the venerable sports venue of the 1954 World Championship Finals 27
REFERENCES Think Big: A hockey field on the road Field hockey is taking over large stadiums. The first reusable hockey turf that can also be laid on top of natural grass surfaces with- out causing damage has made it possible England Hockey, Polytan and other partners started the project under the title “Big Stadium Hockey”. For the first time in history, official field hockey matches were played on synthetic turf in the stadium of the first-league Harle- quins rugby club in the London district of Twickenham. The turf was installed for a weekend on top of the natural grass field. One of the challenges was to not cause any damage to the substrate so that the rugby home team could play their next match on a flawless surface on the following weekend. The hockey field also had to comply with the highest inter- national standards and be installed and uninstalled with- in a few days in June of 2019. The substrate could not be damaged in any way, and the hockey turf was to be reused subsequently. The planners also greatly empha- sised the environmental aspect. Thus, the playing surface Poligras Tokyo GT was installed, which will also be used at the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo. Poligras Tokyo GT mainly consists of natural raw materials and uses about 65 percent less water than older hockey fields. The turf had to be subjected to numerous tests before it could be used for the first time, which is why, among oth- er things, a test field was set up in the central office of the British Hockey Association at the Bisham Abbey National Sports Centre. Feedback from top British players as well as laboratory tests by the International Hockey Federation FIH were taken into account in the development process. The goal was to create a playing surface that does not differ in any way from normal professional playing fields. 28
REFERENCES The solution: portable and three-layered turf The structure of the mobile hock- ey field has three layers based on a type of synthetic lattice. This provides continued ventila- tion for the substrate and allows it to absorb water. Moreover, an elastic layer is placed on top of the substrate on which the turf is ultimately laid. The latter is rolled up again after usage; both low- er layers consist of interlocking modules that can be quickly and easily installed and uninstalled. This new turf system makes it possible for field hockey to also be played in large stadiums. The stadium of Harlequins can accommodate nearly 15,000 spectators, much more than most other stadiums purely designated for hockey The mobile hockey turf was used for both FIH Pro League match- es of the men’s and women’s British national hockey teams. The event was a tremendous success drawing in over 12,000 spectators. FIH is presently cer- tifying the system. Once certifi- cation is complete, the hockey sport can finally move to large stadiums, thereby increasing the popularity of the sport. By the way, the hockey turf was also installed in Bisham Abbey as part of a training facility for the national players in preparation for Tokyo 2020 29

The courts, which are also stationary, can be installed without a solid foundation; this ena- bles their use in new building projects or even on existing surfaces. The range is supplemented with the Multi mini-pitch, which is equipped with a high-performance synthetic surface in place of the turf. This also opens up the idea of mini-pitches for sports such as basketball, hand- ball, badminton, volleyball and hockey. 30

POLYTAN SYNTHETIC TURF SYSTEMS Synthetic turf systems: structure and technology Synthetic turf systems from Polytan are high-tech products that are made up of different components depending on the intended use. The Polytan Anti-Compac- tion System (ACS) is a precisely defined combination of a synthetic turf surface, infill granules and an elastic layer. The combination selected has significant influ- ence on the preferred play properties, as well as the durability and longevity of the system TURF FILAMENTS Together with the infill and elastic layer, the turf fila- ments tufted onto a backing determine the protection and playing properties of the turf system. Depending on the relevant application, smooth or textured turf fi- bres with precisely defined properties are used. In re- cent years, combinations of both filament types have been increasingly installed that combine the benefits of both forms of filament. INFILL Depending on the system, different filling materials such as elastic rubber granules, natural infill materials or quartz sand ensure an authentic play experience, grip and traction for rapid changes of pace or direc- tion, clean ball rolling behaviour and a high degree of player protection. Professional hockey turfs are usually laid down as unfilled turf carpets and do not require any infill at all due to the high fibre density. Unfilled turfs with higher pile heights and somewhat lower stitch densities have also been used very recently for football turf sys- tems. The absence of granules is compensated by a high filament count and a significantly higher yarn mass. 32 32 ELASTIC (BASE) LAYER (IN-SITU) Directly below the turf, there is a 25-35 mm elastic layer made of rubber granules and a PU bonding agent produced by Polytan. This provides a long-term guar- antee for the elasticity required to ensure player safety, while the system’s structure in-situ levels out any une- venness in the subfloor.
Subfloor preparation A B C Polytan football, rugby and hockey turf systems are generally installed on a base layer without a binder in conjunction with a bound elastic base layer. Standard DIN 18035-7 describes the requirements that the sub- structure has to fulfil. BOUND, ELASTIC BASE LAYER Bound, elastic base layers 35 mm thick and up are pro- duced in situ – that is, directly on site – from crushed stone and an elastic component in conjunction with a binder. They are water-permeable and completely flat and entirely seamless due to the in situ construction method. UNBOUND BASE LAYER On top of the elastic base layer, there is a single or multi-level base layer that is around 200 mm thick and is made of natural aggregates; this layer has a stable central framework without the use of a bonding agent. In combination with the elasticised base layer, this ensures the load-bearing capacity of the turf system, while its water- permeable design enables rainwater to quickly disperse. FOUNDATION The foundation, consisting of the substructure and subfloor, must have load-bearing capacity, and in par- ticular must ensure that the layers above it are even. It also absorbs seeping water or, in combination with a drainage system, supplies it to a run-off area. 33 33 ABC
PolyCoat Coating: Less is more The back coating of the synthetic turf is meant to ensure the stability and fixing of the tufts over the useful life of the turf. Until now, the coating was usually made of latex. Polytan is taking it one step further. With the new polyurethane coating PolyCoat, the backing of the turf carpet has been improved in terms of functionality, environmental balance and use The demands placed on modern synthetic turf sys- tems are constantly increasing. Previous develop- ments focused on creating a feel as close as pos- sible to natural turfs, and on achieving high levels of availability and useability. These are joined today by additional aspects that include health, the envi- ronment, and later recyclability once the turf reaches the end of its lifespan. With our new PolyCoat back- ing coating, we’ve taken a fresh step in the direction of system compatibili- ty and durability. Our new TuftGuard func- tion has increased the p ul l- o u t - re s i st an c e of our tufts to over 50 newtons, ensur- ing that the tufts are optimally anchored in the turf backing from the very beginning. Each indi- vidual filament is separately secured once again through in- tensive penetration of the wear coat material into the tuft base. This helps prevent a domino effect in the event of a filament coming loose. Another positive effect is that the durability limit of the complete system is reached significantly later in the system’s lifetime. This is especially evident in the stress areas such as the goal area or around the cen- tre circle. Resistance against moisture (hydrolysis resistance) has also been improved. The molecular structures of the PolyCoat coating stay unchanged longer, which also results in a longer service life. The improved process- ability ensures a more secure seam connection in all 34 34
weather conditions. What’s more, Polytan has always used PU adhesive for its seam connections. Since this plastic is now used both as an adhesive and back lay- er, this results in an even better connection between the layer and the adhesive. This combination makes the whole system significantly more robust under all conditions than the latex coatings used previously. The Polytan PolyCoat coating has another important benefit. The improved tuft insertion is achieved with a 30 per cent reduction in the amount of material used. Six tonnes of CO2 are thereby saved during produc- tion for a pitch measuring 6,000 square metres. Less material also means less weight, which in turn has a positive effect on transportation. The polyurethane (PU) of the back layer is compatible with the polyethylene turf fibres, which significantly simplifies recycling later. Separation of the materials is therefore no longer absolutely necessary. The turf and back layer can be recycled together. Better functionality, longer service life, simpler recycling and less mate- rial used: Our new PolyCoat wear coat technology with TuftGuard function sets new stand- ards for the backing coating of synthetic turf systems in a number of respects, and is representative of Polytan’s lead- ing technological position 35 35

Turf fibres All turf fibres made by Polytan are produced using a pre- mium PE polymer formulation which has been developed in-house. Special fibre geometries and cross-section de- signs make our turfs particularly resilient, and feature ex- traordinary shock absorption, a great deal of wear resist- ance and reliable fibre resilience. The particularly soft PE formula guarantees that it feels comfortable against the skin. Depending on the intended use, Polytan offers synthetic turf systems with straight or textured turf fibres, while two-colour filaments help to create a more natural grass look Straight turf filaments The ideal choice for football pitches or play- ing fields used only for football. They feel soft for the players and create a natural feel for the match with perfect ball rolling and rebound properties. Almost exclusively straight turf fibres are used in professional football, rugby and American football. Textured turf filaments Although they previously mainly occupied the hockey pitch, textured turfs have undergone significant development over recent years, and become even softer due to special for- mulations and fibre designs. The textured structure efficiently holds sand and infill in place and ensures long-lasting volume. This means that these turfs enable intensive use while also providing a high level of availability and reduced costs for maintenance and care. Technologies for a safe, dynamic game With a huge number of innova- tions, Polytan continues to ensure that the play properties of artificial turf systems are increasingly sim- ilar to those of natural grass. COOLPLUS FUNCTION Polytan synthetic turf systems equipped with the CoolPlus func- tion reliably prevent the playing field from getting too hot. This is made possible by pigments in- corporated on the surface of the turf fibres, which effectively reflect the infrared part of solar radiation – which is responsible for heating up the turf – on an ongoing basis. ENTANGLEMENT TECHNOLOGY Our ENTANGLEMENT technology cross-links the molecule chains in the turf fibres with each other to create an additional non-direc- tional molecular link. This results in improved abrasion protection and protection against UV age- ing, no splaying of thinner fibre areas and improved strength in all stress zones. PRECITEX TECHNOLOGY PreciTex enables precisely con- trolled crimping of textured fibres, regardless of the fibre cross-sec- tion. The result is a multi-direc- tional and tightly sealed surface with optimum ball rolling behav- iour, which simultaneously sup- ports the cooling effect of the CoolPlus function.

The so-called infill is found on almost all synthetic turf playing fields. It is incorporated into the turf carpet and makes the synthetic turf pitch playable. The filling material has several functions: it stabilises the blades of the carpet, ensures that they do not lay flat and improves the rolling properties of the ball. Depending on the type of infill, it also provides an athlete the best bio-mechan- ical conditions, for example by its damping properties The fill material is comprised of one or two layers. The lowest layer consists of sand on every pitch. The weight of the sand is required to stabilise the turf carpet. Sand is used exclusive- ly as infill on many pitches, which is inexpensive and does not require too much maintenance. However, sand does not provide the athlete with the same comfort as a second layer that is applied over the sand. The second layer can consist either of cork or rubber gran- ules. Both have significantly better damping properties than pure sand, and they differ in their other properties. Cork granules are a pure natural product. Since cork is very light, the granules float, during heavy rain faster than other infills and can be flushed from the pitch as a result. Strong wind can also result in the discharge of the cork. The intensity of mainte- nance is greater than with pitches filled purely with sand or the alternative for the damping layer, rubber granules. Rubber granules offer the best option due to their physical properties. Although they fall into the category of microplastics due to their size, Polytan products such as Fu- sion GT consist of up to 70 per cent natural materials such as hemp and chalk and meet the toy safety standard EN 71-3. POLYTAN SYNTHETIC SURFACES Synthetic surfaces: structure and technology SMOOTH SURFACE STRUCTURED SURFACE Synthetic surface systems are complex structures which are made up of different layers depending on the intended use. The elastic synthetic surface lay- er, which is 8 to 40 mm thick (and up to 130 mm thick for soft-impact surfaces), is the thinnest and yet most complex part of the entire system. It is crucial for defining the sports-specific and protec- tive properties of the turf. Depending on the spe- cific requirements in each case, different materials are brought together to form a surface that is tai- lored to the intended use. Synthetic surfaces may be water-permeable or waterproof, pour-coated or granulated, and solid or multi-layer. Polytan recommends intensive cleaning in intervals of 1-3 years depending on the location. A suitable sweep-vacuum is used to capture rubber granules on dry turf systems. The captured rubber granulate is then separated from fine abrasions in the sweep-vacuum (fibres, rubber abrasion, sand, foliage remains, etc.) and then returned to the football turf system.
