German Football Museum

Germany
Dortmund
October 2015

Learn about the history of German football at close quarters – an opportunity presented by the German Football Museum since October 2015. Around 1,600 exhibits are on display, including authentic “contemporary witnesses” such as the ball used in the 1954 World Cup final. Also in on the action is Polytan with a DFB mini-pitch, a reminder of the “1,000 mini-pitches for Germany ” campaign back in 2008. Whilst the first half of the exhibition is influenced by the national team, the second half shines the spotlight on club football, with the Bundesliga, the German FA Cup and the European Cup. During the half-time break, visitors can study complex playing systems and discover the training philosophies and tactics of famous coaches. They finish with some sporting action on the Polytan mini-pitch in the generously sized play zone. The 12 x 10.80 m playing field (original size in the museum: 18 x 10.80 m) was installed temporarily on the museum forecourt in the summer of 2016 to make room for a special exhibition on the European Championship. Also from Polytan is the second, round pitch in front of the museum, whose diameter of 4 m makes it ideal for 1-on-1 or 2-on-2 matches.
